How GLP-1 Medications Like Semaglutide Work at Cheval Wellness

Over the last 15 years, Semaglutide has been used to treat type 2 diabetes, but has recently been used to help manage weight loss (along with diet and exercise) in obese or overweight adults with additional risk factors. It works by mimicking a hormone in your body that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite. It slows down how quickly food leaves your stomach, making you feel full longer, and it also helps your body release insulin when your blood sugar levels are high. This combination helps you eat less and lowers blood sugar, which can lead to weight loss and better control of diabetes.

Newer Tirzepatide mimics two hormones instead of one. This means it can make you feel full and control blood sugar even more effectively than semaglutide. So, tirzepatide might work better for some people because it targets more pathways in the body.

Both medications are injected under the skin with a tiny insulin needle, once weekly at any time of day, with or without food, and should be injected on the same day each week.

In 6 months, you could lose up to 20% of your weight, and can continue as long as needed to meet your goal weight. They are not stimulants and are safe for people that weren’t able to use weight loss medications in the past, such as those with heart or liver issues.

Since these medication were initially designed to treat type 2 diabetes, we typically recommend it be taken with our intermittent fasting diet which will be provided under our semaglutide program.
